Summary
Use of R134a is an ideal solution when retrofitting existing plants running on R12, since only the oil needs to be changed. The new oils, i.e. alkylbenzene-type partially-soluble oils or water-resistant PVE oils such as ester oils, allow for retrofitting with only one oil to be changed. Moreover, the expense inherent in replacing R12 with R134a will diminish considerably.
