Summary

The author assures readers that a chiller operating on R12 or R500 can be converted to R134a with little difficulty and comparatively low cost. The steps for conversion are described. If the gearset is changed in a R12 chiller converted to R134a, the efficiency improves by 4%. With no hardware alteration, a change from R500 to R134a gives improved kilowatt per ton ratio, but a reduction in capacity of up to 10%. Hardware changes can maintain original performance. None of these changes is as costly as replacing with new plant and are probably the best solution. D.W.H.
