Open vertical cabinet (multi-deck) with sequential air curtain for better temperature and merchandizing performance

Author(s) : SCHUSTER M., KRIEGER T.

Summary

This paper describes the features of a patented sequential air curtain that allows the storage and merchandizing of minced meat and premium meat products in an open vertical cabinet. Minced meat and premium meat products must be kept at low temperatures with tight tolerances during transport and storage. Until recently, closed cabinets were the only practical way to store these products in a supermarket. This created a consumer access barrier, which negatively impacted sales. The sequential air curtain multi-deck combines superior merchandizing characteristics with stringent product temperature level, range and control features. In step 1, a prototype of a sequential air curtain multi-deck was optimized and qualified in an air-conditioned test room according to ISO test standards. In step 2, field tests with real ambient conditions confirmed that the cabinet is able to maintain products within a temperature range of 0-2°C, equivalent to the performance of closed glass door multi-decks.
