Summary

A network of 16 Gala apple orchards has been observed since 1999. The problem of an optimal maturity harvest window is being checked, and fruit quality evolution under ULO storage is being monitored. The individual parameters of the optimal maturity harvest are more appropriate than the Streif index. The average daily temperatures from a meteorological station have been recorded since March 1st. The comparison between years gives useful information making it possible to foresee the picking dates. In practice, producers generally tend to pick the Gala variety somewhat too late. The consequences on fruit quality and flesh browning are very variable, depending on the year and the orchards.
