Summary
The paper gives an overview of current and possible application of refrigeration technologies within carbon capture and storage (CCS) related applications. CCS is a relatively new area, thus many of the proposed and tested concepts are not mature. Further it will require relatively large capacity plants, enabling utilisation of improvement possibilities resulting from a scale-up, which have not been realistic in the current scale. Finally, efficiency and cost will be very important. If CCS should be possible to realise, a minimum cost and efficiency penalty will be a prerequisite. Different routes for carbon capture within power production and from point sources in industry are presented, together with discussion of possibilities for using refrigeration technologies in the different process parts, as well as process integration options. Several applications of refrigeration technologies are identified. For some of these, they are the preferred option already today, while for others refrigeration technologies seem to be good alternatives to the technologies most commonly considered.
