Summary
BECAUSE OF AN EVER GROWING DIFFUSION OF AIR CONDENSATION SYSTEMS, DUE TO WATER SHORTAGES AND TO THE MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS TYPICAL OF EVAPORATIVE COOLING, THE CURRENT TREND IS TOWARD PACKAGED UNITS PLACED OUTDOORS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TYPES OF COMPONENTS HAS WIDENED THE SELECTION AND IMPROVED THE OVERALL EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEM. (SEASONAL COP INCREASED BY 25% OVER THE PERIOD 1976-1985). NEW COMPRESSORS LIKE THE SCREW AND THE SCROLL TYPES HAVE ALREADY GAINED A SIGNIFICANT SHARE OF THE WATER CHILLER MARKET, WHILE THE VANE COMPRESSOR AWAITS INTRODUCTION. INSIDE MICRO-FINNED TUBES, AND TUBES WITH AN OUTSIDE POROUS COATING HAVE GREATLY IMPROVED THEIR HEAT TRANSFER SURFACE COEFFICIENT. PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY AN EXTREMELY HIGH COMPACTNESS (UP TO 400 M2/M3 ). MICROPROCESSORS ALLOW NEW CONTROL STRATEGIES. INVERTERS ALLOW A STEPLESS AND EFFICIENT CAPACITY CONTROL BY FREQUENCY VARIATION OF AC INPUT. E. F.
