Summary

The bulk structures of water and molecular hydrogen are among the most perplexing, given that the mass of the hydrogen atom is only a third of the next heavier atom capable of easy molecule formation. Work at the University of Amiens, France, has concentrated on the problem through studies of the various forms of ice. In a unit cell of hexagonal ice, a body-centered substructure has been identified from which many of the 12 known forms of ice can be derived. Much is to be learnt still concerning the ordering of the oxygens and hydrogen bonds in these structures. D.W.H.
