Summary

The latent heat of crystallization has been implicated in cellular damage during cryopreservation but there is a lack of data to support this idea. Cryopreservation protocols for three mammalian cell types were modified to accelerate the dissipation of the latent heat after crystallization. Survival was not significantly different for the various protocols. These studies indicate that the latent heat rebound is not a crucial component in cell survival following cryopreservation.
