Summary

The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol came into effect in 2019, and the development of heat pump systems using low-GWP refrigerants is now an urgent task. Refrigerated display cabinets (RDC) have a higher refrigerant leakage rate than air conditioners. In addition, because they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, they consume a lot of energy and generate a correspondingly large amount of CO2 emissions, which must also be taken into consideration. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to the efficient operation of refrigerated display cabinets using low-GWP refrigerants by performing drop-in tests of low-GWP refrigerants into a refrigerated display cabinet and corresponding numerical simulations. Numerical results were found in accurate agreement with experiments and demonstrated that the COP of R454C was about 10% higher than that of R404A in corresponding conditions. Accordingly, R454C can be expected to be a promising substitute of R404A for such application cases.
