Summary

To evaluate the performance of HFC-161 as an alternative refrigerant, parametric analysis of the operating, geometric variables and variable speed performance of a split air conditioner (SAC) is presented in paper. To establish the baseline test, typical 5.1 kW nominal capacity inverter operated SAC originally designed for HC-290 was investigated as per IS 1391 part-1 standard. The HC-290 gave Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency ratio (EERIS) of 4.54. To obtain maximum EERIS, the ideal parameters are developed for HFC-161 system by soft optimization of the original system. According to simulation findings, power consumption and discharge temperature were the lowest for HFC-161 and simulated cooling capacity achieved was 5.10 kW. As a result, the EERIS for HFC-161 increased to 4.78, 5.3 % and 3.2 % higher than HC-290 and HFC-32 respectively. The charge for HFC-161 optimized to 450g, below the permissible range recommended by EN-378. Hence, HFC-161 is promising alternative refrigerant for SAC.
