Summary

THESE PROBLEMS ARE CONCERNED WITH THE WAY OF CHARACTERISING THE COLD-HARDINESS OF PLANTS WITH NUMERICAL EXPRESSIONS, THEN ITS VARIABILITY FACTORS: EXTERNAL FACTORS (TEMPERATURE, LIGHT, WATER) AND FACTORS DEPENDING ON PLANT CHARACTERISTICS (VARIETIES, VARIOUS PARTS, GROWING STAGE, HYDRATION). ANOTHER PROBLEM IS RAISED BY COLD-HARDINESS MECHANISMS LEADING TO VARIOUS ASSUMPTIONS STILL DEBATED ; IT IS NECESSARY TO STUDY HOW TO PREVENT TISSUE TEMPERATURE FROM DECREASING BELOW THE FREEZING POINT: SELECTION OF GROWING AREAS, CONTROL OF SOIL RADIATION, DIRECT HEAT SUPPLY, WATERING. IT IS IMPORTANT TO SELECT OR OBTAIN COLD-HARDY VARIETIES, MAINTAINING THE PLANTS IN A COLD-HARDINESS STATE (DELAYED GROWTH OR FLOWERING). IN ADDITION, ONE MAY ATTEMPT TO INCREASE RESISTANCE BY HYBRIDISATION, BY COLD-HARDENING (TEMPERATURE, LIGHT), BY DEHYDRATION OR BY MAINTAINING LOW HUMIDITY AND BY THE SUPPLY OF MATERIALS, THE STUDY OF WHICH SHOULD BE FURTHERED.
