Summary

The Government of Egypt is one of the initial signatories of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol which were ratified by Egypt as early as 1988. Egypt actively participated in all international meetings dealing with the protection of the stratospheric ozone layer. The Egyptian Government has shown sustained commitment to reduce the consumption of ozone depleting substances (ODS). Activities to protect the ozone layer started as early as 1986, since then, it has moved aggressively to reduce ODS consumption. A reduction of more than 60% in demands for ODS was achieved in 1991, primarily through a government ban on the use of CFCs in aerosols.
