POSTHARVEST HANDLING PROCEDURES TO REDUCE BITTER PIT IN APPLES.

Summary

THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS PROVED THAT POSTHARVEST HANDLING AND STORAGE OPERATIONS DO INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF BITTER PIT IN GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLES, WHICH SHOULD BE PRECOOLED IMMEDIATELY AFTER HARVEST AND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO 272.5 K (-0.5 DEG C). PACKED IN POLYETHYLENE BAGS IN CARTONS THEY DEVELOPED LESS BITTER PIT THAN WHEN PACKED IN CARTONS ONLY, AND THE RATE OF PRECOOLING THEN BECOMES LESS IMPORTANT. POST-HARVEST CALCIUM DIP TREATMENTS RESULTED IN LESS BITTER PIT BUT THE INCIDENCE OF LENTICEL INJURY IS UNACCEPTABLE.
