Potential of energy saving by performance inspections, report from the evaluation of 170 detailed field inspections with the "internal method".

Author(s) : BERGLÖF K., PRAKASH J.

Summary

The paper introduces two methods, the "internal" and "external" for performance inspections on refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems. It reports results from 164 performance analyses done with the "internal" method. The data has been entered into a database and the deviations from nominal data have been evaluated as well as the type of faults. In total 87% of the systems had one or more faults documented. The average deviation from nominal capacity is -8.6% and the deviation in COP is -9.7%. The most common problems are wrong charge and problems with expansion valves. The internal method is increasingly in use for maintenance, inspections and integrated in building management systems for continuous monitoring. It has proved to identify a large number of faults. It offers a possibility for significantly improved "performance inspections" to satisfy the intentions of article 9 in the Energy performance in buildings Directive.
