Practical interim solutions for existing R12 and R502 installations: technical data and case studies on R409A and R408A.

Summary

The paper summarizes the data on two interim HCFC blends, Forane R409A and R408A, to be used on retrofit applications of R12 and R502 equipment. The main advantage of these blends, in addition to their similar operating conditions to the refrigerant they replace, is the fact that they are compatible with any oil, even mineral oil, on most applications making for simplified retrofit procedures. Information on the miscibility of R409A and R408A with mineral oil is presented. Data is presented detailing flammability information generated in accordance to Underwriters Laboratories and ASHRAE conditions. Several case studies are presented showing actual equipment data based on retrofits, comparing conditions before and after the procedure to demonstrate how suitable the blends are for retrofitting.
