Summary

A hybrid artificial liver support system using isolated hepatocytes in its bioreactor and hepatocyte transplantation were studied to establish a new therapeutic method for patients with hepatic failure. For clinical application of these new therapeutic methods, large amounts of viable hepatocytes must always be obtainable for urgent clinical needs. The present status of hepatocyte preservation is reviewed and its future aspects are discussed.
