HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN IS COMMONLY USED IN CHEMICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS PARTIAL OXIDATION OF COAL, HEAVY OILS, NAPHTA, NATURAL GAS, TO PROVIDE FEED STOCKS FOR METHANOL, AMMONIA, REFINERY HYDROGEN, ETC. THE DESIGN PRESSURE OF THE OXYGEN IS OFTEN DETERMINED BY THE END-USE PRESSURE OF THE FINAL PRODUCT STREAM. THE BENEFITS OF USING HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN ARE VARIED: IT REDUCES THE CAPITAL COST ; FACILITATES CERTAIN REACTIONS WHICH ARE MORE FAVORABLE AT HIGH PRESSURE ; AND IMPROVES THE EFFICIENCY OF THE OVERALL SYSTEM. IN THE FUTURE, THE SYNTHETIC FUEL INDUSTRY WILL REQUIRE HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN IN VERY LARGE QUANTITIES. THIS TREND TOWARDS HIGHER RATES AND HIGHER PRESSURE ARE CAUSING SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE DESIGN OF OXYGEN PLANTS AND MACHINERY.
