Progress and perspectives of the LHC project.

Progrès et perspectives du projet LHC.

Author(s) : LEBRUN P.

Summary

The LHC project, approved by CERN's board in December 1994, has now entered its construction phase, after a decade of research and development in the key technologies of NbTi-superconducting-multifilamentary cables, of high-field-superconducting magnets, of superfluid-helium-operated high-power cryogenics and of ultravacuum-cooling systems submitted to intense high-energy-particle beams. Besides the implementation of these laboratory-developed technologies on an industrial scale, LHC also involves use of more classic disciplines under specific conditions (large-cavity-construction civil engineering or high-precision power supply), by the European industry.
