Summary

DROPLETS OF AQUEOUS SALT SOLUTIONS ARE RAPIDLY COOLED DOWN FROM 280 TO 200 K. THE THICKNESS OF THE LAYER OF UNFROZEN SOLUTION IN UNIDIRECTIONAL FREEZING IS MEASURED BY THE FLUORESCENCE QUENCHING OF 9-AMINOACRIDINE. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SOLUTION IS RECORDED DURING RAPID COOLINGBY THE DUAL FLUORESCENCE OF 4-METHYLUMBELLIFERONE. THE FREEZING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED BY BOTH THE PROGRESSION OF FREEZING AND THE CORRESPONDING COOLING CURVE.
