Summary

NxtHPG project ‘Next Generation of Heat Pumps working with natural fluids’ is a Research and Development project partially funded by the European Union under the frame of the Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonstration of EU, under grant agreement No [307169]. NxtHPG project targets the development of a new series of safe, reliable, high efficiency heat pumps working with natural refrigerants (namely: Hydrocarbons and CO2) up to 60 kW of heating capacity, in several applications where the take-off of this technology could be reasonably short if the performance of the unit is good and the cost is reasonable. The project involves a large group of OEMs of both components and heat pumps who are providing their best technology to reach the project objectives. The objectives, structure and first results of the project were previously presented at Gustav Lorentzen 2014. During the first year of the project, five heat pump prototypes were designed, modelled and constructed: 3 prototypes working with propane and 2 prototypes working with CO2. After the construction of the prototypes, a first experimental campaign was carried out by the research groups involved at the different labs located in Stockholm, Spain and Italy. This paper presents an initial assessment of results of the project with a critical review of the objectives.
