Summary
The high-temperature heat pump (HTHP) integrated with an energy system that consists of a borehole thermal energy storage (BTES), a photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) system, a battery, and thermal energy storage (TES) was modeled in Matlab and investigated. The main objective of this work was to establish pure renewable energy-based high-temperature heating with a better coefficient of performance (COP). The HTHP was modeled as a cascade heat pump using propane in the low stage (LS), and a zeotropic mixture in the high stage (HS). The zeotropic mixture consists of carbon dioxide (CO2) and butane. Meteonorm was used to collect the weather data. The Refprop was linked to Matlab to get the refrigerant properties. There was a good temperature match was found between the water and the proposed refrigerant mixture. The heat pump was dimensioned to produce 250 kW, and the maximum capacity of the TES and battery was 1000 kW h, and 250 kW h, respectively. The simulation was based on weather data from Oslo, Norway. The entire energy system was simulated to identify performance. At every iteration, heat demand, electric power, and available heat were calculated, which decided the heat pump's operation. Results indicated that the heat pump operated with a COP of 3.01 with full coverage of the system's heat demand and a shortcoming for some time.
