Propane as a working fluid in domestic heat pumps.

Summary

An assessment of using propane as a working fluid in domestic heat pumps is undertaken. Although propane is flammable, there are no major impediments incurred by its use in heat pumps, provided that the system is designed to minimise the chance of ignition. Theoretical vapour compression cycles for CFC-12, HCFC-22, and propane have been simulated. The standard performance parameters were compared and the results are presented. In term of theoretical heating COP, they are comparable. Practical safety aspects are also discussed.
