Summary

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE LATEST EFFORTS BY COMPANIES IN SWITZERLAND TO RECOVER AND RECYCLE BOTH REFRIGERANTS AND POLYURETHANE INSULATION FROM THE 300,000 HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE THERE EVERY YEAR. THE LATEST EQUIPMENT IS DESCRIBED, INCLUDING THE ONLY MACHINE IN THE COUNTRY WHICH CAN RECOVER CFCS FROM INSULATION FOAM (SUCH MACHINES ARE MORE COMMON IN GERMANY). THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPANDING THE USE OF SUCH MACHINES IS IMPORTANT, GIVEN THAT THERE ARE 3 TO 4 TIMES MORE CFCS IN THE INSULATION FOAM THAN IN THE REFRIGERATING CIRCUIT. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE RECOVERY-RECYCLING PROCESS IN GENERAL AND POINTS OUT FLAWS IN ITS ORGANIZATION. M. C.
