FRUIT OF < VALENCIA > ORANGE AND < MURCOTT > TANGERINE WERE SUBJECTED TO COLD TREATMENT AT 274.1 K (1.1 DEG C) FOR 17 DAYS AS PRESCRIBED FOR THE DISINFESTATION OF THE CARIBBEAN FRUIT FLY. FRUIT QUALITY WAS EVALUATED DURING STORAGE AT 277.4 K (4.4 DEG C) FOR ONE WEEK FOLLOWED BY 2 WEEKS AT 294.1 K (21.1 DEG C). FRUIT UNDER COLD TREATMENT DID NOT DEVELOP ANY PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS. COLOUR AND GENERAL APPEARANCE REMAINED UNAFFECTED. DECAY WAS 2.3% FOR TANGERINE AND 7.2% FOR ORANGE. MOISTURE LOSS WAS ABOUT 5%. FRUIT QUALITY, INCLUDING FLAVOUR, WAS FOUND TO BE ACCEPTABLE IN TANGERINE DURING SUBSEQUENT STORAGE. YET THE QUALITY OF < VALENCIA > REMAINED ACCEPTABLE FOR ONE WEEK ONLY AT 277.4 K.
