Summary
The phase-out of ozone depleting substances is having a significant impact on the fishing industry, where R22 is widely used as a working fluid for refrigeration. R404A is proving to be a good replacement for R22, in new-build systems as well as in existing vessels. The paper compares the characteristics of R404A with those of R22, discusses the implications of conversion of existing systems to R404A, and describes some uses of R404A in fishing vessels today.
