Summary

The paper enumerates both the primary and secondary causes of postharvest losses. Modern postharvest technologies designed to improve the quality, shelf life and prevent losses of fruits and vegetables for marketing are presented. Strategies for the adoption of modern postharvest technologies by cooperatives and small-scale farmers, and the current market situation of fruits and vegetables, are briefly discussed.
