Summary

IT IS GENERALLY EXPECTED THAT THE ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTED ALTERNATIVE FOR R12 (IE R134A) WILL BECOME COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE AROUND 1992/1993. A PREREQUISITE IS THAT THE CURRENT TOXICITY STUDIES OF R134A GIVE NO INDICATION OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. A NUMBER OF THE PROPERTIES OF R134A SIGNIFICANTLY DEVIATE FROM THOSE OF R12. SOME REDESIGN OF SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS IS THEREFORE NECESSARY. A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF R12 BY R134A WILL THEREFORE TAKE CONSIDERABLE TIME. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE REDUCTION OF R12 CONSUMPTION DURING THE FIRST FEW YEARS CAN BE REALISED BY EMISSION PREVENTION AND BY A CHANGE FROM R12 TO R22 FOR SOME APPLICATIONS.
