Summary

R134A WILL GIVE A SLIGHTLY REDUCED REFRIGERATION CAPACITY COMPARED WITH R12 AT HIGH EVAPORATING AND LOW CONDENSING TEMPERATURES. AT EVAPORATING TEMPERATURES BELOW ABOUT 263 K (-10 DEG C), THE DIFFERENCE INCREASES. THE TYPE OF COMPRESSOR OIL REQUIRED IS DIFFERENT AND IS MORE HYGROSCOPIC. AN OIL SEPARATOR WILL BE REQUIRED IN MOST CASES. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT R134A CAN BE USED AS A RETROFIT ALTERNATIVE REPLACEMENT WITHOUT EXTENSIVE TRAINING OF ON-SITE ENGINEERS, BUT AS A REPLACEMENT IN NEW DESIGN IT SEEMS POSSIBLE. D.W.H.
