Summary
The authors describe the results of a series of experimental tests carried out at the Technical Institute of Refrigeration, Padua, Italy. The same experimental plant was used for the 3 refrigerants, with the heat exchangers in particular remaining unchanged, without optimization. This has been taken into account in the analysis of test results, which mostly concentrate on the thermodynamic properties of refrigerants and on the compressor operating conditions. The experimental plant is described as well as the experimental protocol of the 3 refrigerants considered and for each test, tables of results are given. The results obtained with each substitute are compared with those of R22, on the basis of refrigerating capacity, COP and isentropic efficiency. The results confirm that R407C can be considered almost equivalent to R22 except for evaporation temperatures around -20 deg C, and more research is needed. In spite of lower theoretical COP, R410A actually showed better results than R22, due to better heat exchange ability and lower pressure loss inside compressor and tubes. Further research is needed on R410A to confirm or disprove its advantage.
