Refrigerant retrofits: an overview.

Type of article: Article, Review
Summary
The owners of CFC-based centrifugal chillers have several options as CFC production is banned. Change is forced by an obvious price rise as CFC from existing stock or reclamation becomes scarce. Simple conversions are cheapest with open drive chillers where seal and gasket replacement may give operation on a substitute refrigerant although at reduced efficiency. Alternatives include complete driveline replacement of motor, gearbox and controls, or a complete unit replacement. All equipment owners must plan a future strategy. Reclaimed refrigerant will be in limited supply. Manufacturers and service facilities will not be able to deal with a sudden rush for change as the phase out date approaches. D.W.H.
