Refrigerants: ammonia and n-butane mixtures.

Author(s) : YOKOZEKI A.

Summary

The thermodynamic properties of R717 (ammonia) and R600 (n-butane) mixtures have been correlated with a simple cubic equation of state, using available experimental data in the literature. Various phase diagrams and VLE (vapour-liquid equilibria) critical loci are calculated. Below about 52 °C, this binary system forms VLLE (vapour-liquid-liquid equilibrium) three phases with heterogeneous azeotropes (around 55 wt% of R717), and above this temperature it forms homogeneous azeotropes which survive up to the VLE critical line. Pressure-enthalpy diagrams for two and three phase regions are constructed, and thermodynamic cycle calculations are made. The ideal and non-ideal cycle performances with these heterogeneous systems (VLLE) are compared and discussed with those of other refrigerants.
