THEAUTHOR GOES THROUGH THE DEFINITION OF REFRIGERANTS AND OF THEIR UTILIZATION. FIRSTLY, HE REVIEWS THE SELECTION CRITERIA OF A REFRIGERANT AND, THEN, ANALYZES ALL THE FAMILIES OF PRODUCTS, USABLE AS REFRIGERANTS, CLASSIFIED IN A TABLE DIFFERENTIATING PURE FLUIDS FROM MIXTURES, SIMPLE ELEMENTS, INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. THEN, HE GIVES THE DEFINITION OF SYMBOLS, SUCH AS HCFC OR CFC, OFTEN BADLY-USED IN THE COMMON LANGUAGE. HE COMMENTS UPON THE FAMILY OF HYDROCARBONS AND NOTABLY THE METHANE AND ETHANE DERIVATES. THE LAST CHAPTER DEALS WITH USES ACCORDING TO FIELDS AND TO THE SOURCE TEMPERATURE OF THE APPLICATION. AS A CONCLUSION, THE AUTHOR MAKES A DISTINCTION BETWEEN USES WHICH ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THE CFC PHASE-OUT, THOSE WHICH ARE LITTLE AFFECTED AND THOSE WHICH, ON THE CONTRARY, ARE HIGHLY AFFECTED ; HE INDICATES THE SUBSTITUTES CUR-RENTLY CONSIDERED.
