REFRIGERATED LIQUID METHANE AS A TRANSPORTATION FUEL.
Author(s) : KIRKLAND R. J., ARNDT B. M.
Summary
IN 1987, AIR PRODUCTS AND CHEMICALS INC. TEAMED WITH BURLINGTON NORTHERN RAILROAD TO DEMONSTRATE LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) AS A PREFERRED ALTERNATE TO DIESEL FUEL IN LOCOMOTIVES. CURRENTLY, REFRIGERATED LIQUID METHANE, A PURIFIED FORM OF LNG, IS BEING USED TO FUEL A TRAIN HAULING COAL FROM MONTANA TO MINNESOTA. THE TRAIN CONSISTS OF FOUR 3,000 HP LOCOMOTIVES CONVERTED TO RUN ON REFRIGERATED LIQUID METHANE, TWO TENDER CARS TO CARRY THE REFRIGERATED LIQUID METHANE FUEL AND DELIVER IT TO THE LOCOMOTIVES, AND 100 COAL CARS EACH CONTAINING 100 TONS OF COAL. IN ADDITION TO SAVINGS FROM FUEL COST DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DIESEL FUEL AND NATURAL GAS, MAINTENANCE SAVINGS AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS EXIST.
