Summary

Breweries and malt houses use entirely centralized refrigerating plants and ammonia and R22 as refrigerants. In order to cover peak needs, three different systems are used for accumulation of cold: ice generator, cold water or glycol generator, and open circulation for water cooling with a cold water accumulator. Process tanks are cooled by means of coils welded to their walls. Direct cooling is done by the refrigerant, by ice water or by glycol. These vessels are in most cases set up in refrigerated rooms. Malt houses are refrigerated by ice water, and CO2 recovery is generally done. In view of work safety, direct refrigerant cooling is being replaced by indirect cooling. The trend is toward building large public cold stations to service several plants.
