Refrigeration in freeze-drying.

Le froid en lyophilisation.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The double role of refrigeration in freeze-drying is explained. The two possibilities of cold production are treated : either open cycle with consumable fluid source, or closed cycle with periodic regeneration of the same fluid. The energy load of an open liquid nitrogen cycle is established taking account of various losses, and fluid consumption is evaluated. The closed cycle evaporation system for recompression and reliquefaction of the refrigerant is detailed and its operation illustrated with a Mollier diagram, prior to an actual diagram. In the two systems the quality of the exchangers determines the performance of the freeze-dryer and those items known to give good results are mentioned. Two industrially assessed examples are given, one for the open and the other for the closed cycle. The choice between the two technologies is dependent upon the supply problems of lost fluid or those resulting from the use of CFCs and drop-in fluids. J.L.
