Summary

The largest heat pumps in the world are located in Sweden. The Rya heat pump plant in Gothenburg has four heat pumps which supply a maximum of 160 megawatts of heat to the city's district heating system. Two of these are in a class of their own, being the largest in the world with a heating capacity of around 50 megawatts each. Installed between 1982 and 1986, all these heat pumps were designed for use with R12. Since 1993, work has been going on to replace this refrigerant with R134a. In the article, those involved in the replacement process report on the progress so far.
