Research activities on magnetocaloric effect at IFW Dresden.

Author(s) : GUTFLEISCH O., YAN A., KUZ'MIN M., et al.

Summary

The authors have studied the magnetocaloric properties of several compounds: La(Fe,Si)13, Gd5(Si,Ge)4, R2Fe17 and Mn-Fe-P-Ge. Large magnetic entropy changes were obtained in La(Fe,Si)13 melt-spun ribbons subjected to a very short time annealing. The formation and stability of Gd-Si-Ge-type compounds have been characterised in terms of composition and processing parameters. A phase transition near room temperature is induced in Gd-Si-Ge alloy by high pulsed magnetic field. Low-cost Fe-based Pr-Fe and Y-Fe show a similar magnetocaloric effect at room temperature as that observed in the expensive Gd. Mn-Fe-P-Ge was prepared by induction-melting and subsequent annealing.
