Summary

FROM 1980 TO 1982, RESEARCH WAS CARRIED OUT INTO THE STORAGE BEHAVIOUR OF CHARLESTON GRAY WATERMELONS. THE EFFECT OF PACKAGING MATERIAL, CHEMICAL TREATMENT AND HARVESTING DATE ON QUALITY WAS STUDIED. WATERMELONS PACKED IN TYPE P WOOD BOXES, PALLETIZED AND STORED AT 276-278 K (3-5 DEG C), 80-85% RH, WERE OF BETTER QUALITY, PROVIDED THAT THE CASES WERE COVERED WITH PAPER AND TREATED PRIOR TO STORAGE WITH 1% BORDEAUX SOLUTION OR 0.1% TOPSIN. THE SHELF LIFE WAS 20-30 DAYS. EARLY HARVESTED WATERMELONS WERE MORE RESISTANT THAN THE OTHERS.
