Review and prospects for use of controlled-atmosphere technology in Mexican agribusiness.

Summary

Controlled-atmosphere technology for storage of fruit and vegetables is reviewed. The 3 main methods used to produce the inert nitrogen gas used for controlled atmosphere applications: cryogenic distillation, pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system, and membrane systems are discussed. Controlled-atmosphere applications, including transport applications in intermodal containers and refrigerated ships are described. The prospects for the use of controlled-atmosphere techniques in Mexico, and the benefits for Mexican agribusiness (maintaining product quality, increasing distribution flexibility, and increasing potential market size) are considered.
