Simplified conversion procedure to R134a for farm vat refrigeration systems.

Summary

For farm milk vat refrigeration systems with evaporators constructed into the floor of the vat, the currently accepted method of conversion from R12 to R134a requires approximately three ester oil flushes while operating on R12. Three simplified methods of conversion from refrigerant R12 to R134a were tested in a typical New Zealand dairy farm milk vat. All three led to subsequent satisfactory performance of the system from thermodynamic and operating reliability viewpoints. Simple one-step conversions, with or without R12 in the system during the oil change are satisfactory for such systems.
