Summary
The performance of an inverter heat pump room air conditioner under refrigerating and heating conditions was numerically studied. A steady-state distributed-parameter model was developed. A MATLAB program was coded to calculate the properties of refrigerants and wet air, and to simulate the working system of compressor, condenser, capillary vessel and evaporator. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data. Hence, the system model can be applied to simulate and predict both refrigerating and heating performance of the air conditioner working either in summer or winter. Furthermore, a detailed investigation was conducted on the influence of some important factors, such as the length of capillary tube and the fin space, on the refrigerating capacity, power consumption and COP. It was found that the optimal length of the capillary tube is 0.8 m for refrigerating condition and 2.0 m for heating condition, which enables the air conditioner to work at the highest COP. The COP decreases with the increase in fin space in the range of 1-2.6 mm. However, the suitable fin space should also allow for easier defrosting in winter. Therefore, both COP and defrosting issue should be carefully considered when determine the right fin space. The results obtained from this research are useful for the structure optimization of air-conditioning units.
