Summary

IN FROZEN AQUEOUS DMSO SOLUTIONS THE QUANTITIES OF ICE WERE MEASURED IN THE CONCENTRATION RANGE BETWEEN 3 AND 50 WT% DMSO. DIFFERENTLY GREAT DEVIATIONS FROM THERMODYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM HAVE BEEN FOUND OVER THE WHOLE RANGE, IE CLEARLY LOWER QUANTITIES OF ICE HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. CAUSED BY THIS PHENOMENON, ALSO THE CONCENTRATION OF THE RESPECTIVEUNFROZEN PHASE IS LOWER THAN THE EUTECTIC. BOTH FACTS CAN BE REGARDED AS A CRYOPROTECTIVE PROPERTY OF THE SOLUTION SYSTEM.
