Summary
The author retraces the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant since the mid-19th century and describes its revival in Australia in various refrigeration systems. Many applications in supermarkets, the food industry and the tertiary sector use facilities operating with a one or two-stage transcritical CO2 cycle, or associated with ammonia in a cascade refrigeration system, and also for heating.
