STATUS AND FUTURE OF ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS TO CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS.

Author(s) : KUTTER W.

Summary

DU PONT HAS PROPOSED A COMPLETE PHASE-OUT OF ALL CFC COMPOUNDS IN A TIME-SCALE WHICH WILL ALLOW A TRANSITION TOWARDS THE USE OF SUBSTITUTES. IT HAS IDENTIFIED SEVERAL POSSIBLE SUBSTITUTES, SPECIFICALLY FOR R11 AND R12. THESE ARE R123 AND R134A, RESPECTIVELY. RESEARCH IS IN PROGRESS, ON THE COMPATIBILITY WITH CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND TYPES OF OIL, TOXICITY AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. PRELIMINARY RESULTS INDICATE THAT THESE TWO PROPOSED COMPOUNDS ARE VIABLE. A TIMETABLE HAS BEEN PROPOSED, AND THE NEAREST DATE ENVISAGED IS THE END OF 1992.
