Summary

Glycerol was used as a cryoprotectant for spermatozoa and then for embryos; this was successful for several animals, but not for swine; freezing techniques are described, using an "equilibrium method" with a solution of glycerol, cooled and frozen relatively slowly till -30 deg C and then rapidly with liquid nitrogen. There is also a nonequilibrium method in which a special solution (sucrose, glycerol and propylene glycol) allows a rapid vitrification of the cells and embryos, giving better results in some cases.
