Summary

SO2 is widely used in combating Botrytis cinerea. SO2 can be applied in two ways: periodic fumigation in sulphating chambers or by using generating sachets included in the packaging. However, environmental problems can be associated with use of this gas - phytotoxicity can cause changes in the colour of the fruit and increased residue. An experimental programme investigating other processes was implemented at Cefel in 1996 and focuses on Chasselas and Muscat varieties.
