Summary

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of four different dilutions (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 M) of the cryoprotectant 2,3 butanediol either alone or with added sucrose (0.1 or 0.25 M) on fertilization and embryonic development of mouse oocytes. The fertilization rates of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 M butanediol were 90, 90, 88 and 0% which compared with 90% for controls. Developmental rates (to expanding blastocysts) were 85, 85, 64 and 0% with control rates of 85%. When 0.1 M sucrose was added to 1.5 M butanediol and 0.25 M sucrose to 2.0 M butanediol, the results achieved were fertilization rates of 90 and 90% with developmental rates of 85 and 87% respectively.
