Summary

In a study of desirable fluids for use in a mechanical vapour compression heat pump the authors conclude that a new term, specific volume cooling power is useful as it characterises the size of the compressor. Taking this, together with values of compression ratio, mechanical work, and exergy yield, and applying these criteria to ammonia, R12 and R11, they conclude that R11 is the superior fluid. D.W.H.
