Summary
This study aims to achieve a higher efficiency of outdoor air cooling systems for data centers. The annual power consumption of air conditioning facilities was calculated after modeling the systems using air-side economizer with evaporative humidifier and water-side economizer with cooling tower. The efficiency of each system was improved by operating the economizer in single mode in winter season and by adding a chiller mode during an intermediate season such as spring or fall. Furthermore, an outdoor air cooling system with a combination of both economizers was proposed. These three systems and a base system were compared, and the influence of outdoor air conditions on the power consumption in various parts of Japan was examined. As a result, it was found that when the base system uses water heat source in a high efficiency turbo refrigerating machine with inverter, the power of the combined economizer system is 80-90% of the base power.
