Study on regenerator in travelling wave thermoacoustic engines.

Author(s) : YU Z. B., JAWORSKI A. J.

Summary

In this paper, the stacked-screen regenerator is studied theoretically in the travelling wave limit for an ideal gas. To evaluate the performance of the stacked-screen regenerator, two dimensionless factors are derived based on the net acoustic power production and the critical temperature gradient. These take into account the channel transverse dimension, local acoustic impedance and other parameters related to operating conditions. With a simple form, these factors can cover the key characteristics of acoustic power dissipation and production in the regenerator. They can also explain the influence of local acoustic impedance on the performance of a stacked-screen regenerator in travelling wave thermoacoustic system. Calculated results based on these factors agree with the published experimental results qualitatively.
